AAOC Notches Major Win in Defeating AB 2216

Posted By: Chip Ahlswede Legislative Affairs, Advocacy Updates,

AAOC Lobbyist Ron Kingston scored a major victory for property owners state wide late last week when AB 2216 failed to pass out of committee in the California Senate.

Had this bill passed and become law it would have:

  • Prohibited property owners from limiting tenants from having a common household pet (i.e.. to a dog or cat)
  • Prohibited property owners from asking prospective tenants about their intent to have a pet
  • Prohibited property owners from collecting additional rent or security deposits from tenants who keep a household pet or pets in their units.

These limitations created significant problems for property management including:

  • Not taking into account the welfare of the pets for owners who work full time.
  • Conflicts with existing state health and safety codes related to legal requirements for owners rights in regulating tenant pets
  • Establishes conflicting tenants rights between pet owners and non-pet owners seeking quiet enjoyment of their units

Ron's work on behalf of AAOC has resulted in a major victory on behalf of every member in this association.
