Rental Housing Industry Scores Big State Election Wins

Voters reject Proposition 33, support Propositions 34 and 36.

The California rental housing industry has reason to celebrate today after voters yesterday overwhelmingly rejected Proposition 33 and its attempt to expand local rent control in our state. With 100% of all precincts partially reporting, Proposition 33 is heading toward defeat - 38.4% to 61.6%.

Meanwhile, Proposition 34 is trending toward victory - 51.5% to 48.5%. The rental-housing industry sponsored measure would serve to prevent Michael Weinstein and his AIDS Healthcare Foundation from continuing to use its discounted prescription drug sale profits to run rent control and other potential ballot measures in the state.

Additionally, Proposition 36 is winning convincingly - 70.4% to 29.6% - as voters clearly signaled their desire to have previously eliminated penalties for repeat theft and drug crimes restored.

While there are ballots still to be counted and numbers can certainly change before the Secretary of State certifies the election on December 13, things are looking favorable for the rental housing industry.

Our industry came together, like never before, to not only stop a third attempt at expanding rent control in California, but also to stop the source of these measures from continuing to place them on the ballot, and forcing millions of dollars to be raised and spent each election cycle to defeat them.

AAOC thanks its members who joined our industry’s fight and collectively donated more than $1 million this year to the Multi-County Property Rights PAC to help defeat Proposition 33. Your investment has paid off and our industry stands stronger today.

Thank you for your support, for your commitment to the cause, and for your continued support and trust in AAOC!
