Multi-family property owners, renters to benefit under new Santa Ana trash hauling contract
Santa Ana City Council selected AAOC-supported Republic Services, which proposed lowest multi-family rate.
The Santa Ana City Council voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to award a new, 10-year solid waste collection contract to Anaheim-based Republic Services. The vote represented a victory for multi-family property owners and renters, as Republic Services had proposed the lowest collection rate for multi-family customers among the four companies vying for the exclusive citywide contract. City staff had recommended the contract be awarded to Athens Services, which had proposed the lowest residential rate but the second-highest multi-family rate.
The city council’s selection of Republic Services also represented a victory for the Apartment Association of Orange County (AAOC), which had submitted a letter to the city expressing support for the company’s solid waste collection proposal based upon the rates and services proposed for multi-family customers. AAOC also stressed to the city council that awarding a contract with lower multi-family rates can help to contain a cost that can affect rental rates and housing affordability in a city that has a large population of renters.
The new Santa Ana solid waste collection contract will take effect in July 2022. Under the new contract, multi-family customers will see the following benefits under Republic Services:
- Free, bulky item pickup program that allows for collection of 10 items per unit, per quarter (up to 40 items per unit, per year)
- Integration with “MySantaAna” App
- Local customer service office based in Santa Ana
- 300 roll-off boxes a year for neighborhood clean ups
- 6-day per week cleaning of all illegally dumped items
